Brad Pitt has recently purchased a midcentury modern pavilion tucked into the Los Feliz foothills from oil heiress Aileen Getty for $5.5 million. The property was initially purchased by Getty for $4.1 million from Maroon 5’s James Valentine in 2019. The Steel House, designed by midcentury architect Neil M. Johnson, was largely hewn from steel and glass in 1960, with the squat rectangular roofline emblematic of that era.

Valentine had the entire property restored by acclaimed designer Mark Haddawy, who filled it with retro details and colors, creating a vibrant tribute to the swinging sixties. The house features cantilevered eaves, beamed ceilings, terrazzo floors, and a groovy fireplace that warms the combo living/dining room. The outdoor area has a redwood hot tub, a freestanding sauna building, and a cozy terrace with views of the tropical landscaping to the twinkling city lights below.

All three bedrooms feature striking cobalt blue carpeting, while the kitchen, master bath, and walk-in closet have custom cabinetry painted a pale blue. The L-shaped house partially wraps itself around a sunny backyard, so most of the rooms overlook the pool and patio area. It’s not surprising Pitt would covet Getty’s house, as the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” star is known as an architecture buff.

Pitt has previously owned a modernist Malibu house that was sold to Ellen DeGeneres many years ago, and last year he paid $40 million for the landmark D.L. James house in California’s Carmel Highlands, which has become his primary residence. The acquisition of the Steel House follows his recent sale of a Beverly Hills mansion to a Swedish billionaire for $8 million less than he paid in 2020. Pitt’s new home is a smaller and more modestly priced acquisition, with a cozy and retro atmosphere that is sure to appeal to midcentury design enthusiasts.
